What You Can Do
One of DADD's missions is to help others in the war against addiction at home- Information and Truth is an essential weapon against addiction. You can not get these from an addict. This is a hard attitude, but if you are in this battle you need it. If you suspect a loved one is using drugs, may we recommend a couple of different approaches:
- Seek professional help. There are many reputable in and out patient rehab centers around the country.
- If you are not sure you want to take that road, get to the truth. Before you confront the person you can get a piece of their hair and have it tested. This takes a little time, but it gives you an accurate look at what drugs they have used in the past 4-6 weeks.
- If they are using, sit down with them. Take a zero tolerance approach. People who are using are functioning from an area of their brain that is not governed by logic, love, morals, or guilt.
- Get some Urinalysis Kits on hand.
- Get a commitment to stop from the user.
- Test them whenever you have a feeling to, or when the user displays unusual behavior. This approach is effective in the early stages of addiction and use. Unfortunently some of us open addiction after the first use.
